So what is a VPN?

A VPN or Virtual Private Network creates a secure encrypted connection over a public network, such as the internet. This allows remote users to connect securely to a private network and avoid prying eyes. VPNs are used globally to transfer information of all types. Many educational establishments use them to connect campuses cross country and world wide.

A user connects to a remote server on a Virtual Private Network using a unique ID and password provided by the VPN Service Provider. The user is then issued a PIN (Personal Identification Number) permitting entry to the private network.

To anyone looking at your traffic, it's as if you are actually at the remote server location. So if you live in UK and you connect to a VPN with a node in the United States, it would appear as if you are surfing the web from the US, not the UK.

You can connect your PC, laptop, tablet or even your mobile phone to a VPN and secure your connection end to end. VPNs are a flexible and easy solution to keep your internet browsing safe and secure for you, your family and your business.

Why should I use a VPN?

There are many reasons to use a VPN especially if you frequently travel or if you use public internet services or coffee shop wifi, for example. VPNs help you secure your gaming, gambling, banking and shopping transactions and other online activities. VPNs are ideal for businesses, handling sensitive data across the internet and their operations. Using a VPN it's easy to keep your information safe from prying eyes in a secure and encrypted way.

Recent revelations by the whistle blower Edward Snowden have raised concerns around privacy and security. Mass data gathering by groups such as the NSA and GCHQ and other government bodies have caused an outcry. These organisations have been accused of bulk data collection of online records of entire nations and mass surveillance on an unprecedented level. Maybe it is more important then ever to sign up for a Virtual Private Network and start securing your online presence today.
